      • From Lessons to Independent Research

      • In the Second Cycle, a lesson is often just the beginning. It introduces an idea, sparks curiosity and opens the door to further exploration.

Children are encouraged to follow their questions, search for information and make connections across different areas of learning. A history lesson may lead to geography, science, mathematics, art or literature. Children learn to use books, digital resources, experiments, observations and the world around them to find answers and deepen their understanding.

As they grow, they take increasing responsibility for their own learning. They learn how to choose a topic, formulate questions, find and evaluate information, organise their work and decide how to present what they have discovered. Their research may become a written report, a model, a timeline, an experiment, a presentation or a collaborative project.

The teacher guides, inspires and provides support, but gradually steps back as children become more confident and independent learners.

A lesson is not the end of learning. It is often the beginning of an investigation.
