Responsibility & Community
As children grow, so does their desire for independence – and with it comes greater responsibility.
In the Second Cycle, children are active members of their classroom community. They help care for the environment, organise materials and activities, support younger children and take responsibility for tasks that contribute to the everyday life of the school. They learn that a community works well when everyone plays a part.
Working and living together also means learning how to listen, communicate, solve problems and deal with disagreements. Children participate in making plans and decisions, learn to keep agreements and experience the natural consequences of their choices.
Through these everyday experiences, they develop empathy, cooperation, leadership and a growing sense of responsibility for themselves and for others. Freedom is not simply the ability to choose what we want to do – it is learning to make thoughtful choices while considering the people around us.
Freedom grows together with responsibility.
