Understanding the Bigger Picture
As children grow, their questions become bigger, deeper and more complex. They begin to look beyond individual facts and ask how things are connected, why they happened and what they mean.
In the Second Cycle, mathematics, language, history, geography, biology, science and the arts are not experienced as isolated subjects. Children discover the connections between them as they explore larger ideas and investigate questions that often cross traditional subject boundaries.
History comes alive through timelines, stories and the study of civilizations. Geography helps children understand how people and places influence one another. Science invites experimentation, observation and discovery, while mathematics gradually moves from concrete materials towards increasingly abstract thinking. Language becomes a powerful tool for research, discussion, writing and presenting ideas. Art offers another way to explore, interpret and communicate what children have learned.
Children are challenged academically while being encouraged to think independently, make connections and look at knowledge from different perspectives.
The more connections children discover, the more meaningful their understanding of the world becomes.
